”I’m worried about the world. We see so much shit around.”

Acedia is a state of listlessness or torpor, of not caring or not being concerned with one’s position or condition in the world. It can lead to a state of being unable to perform one’s duties in life. Its spiritual overtones make it related to but arguably distinct from depression.

Franz Xaver Kroetz wrote his play Request Concert in 1971. in a very specific socio-political climate that the BRD (Federal Republic of Germany) was going through at the moment, still haunted by the demons of the post-nazi reality, constantly being in discomfort from terrorist actions by Bader-Meinhof i.e. the Red Army Faction, in a disillusioned world after the massive failure of the 1968-revolution which had raised so many hopes that might have in the long run succeeded in the cultural sphere or the sphere of identity politics but completely failed politically all over the world. He places his silent-majority anti-heroine in a faceless life, taking place in a faceless urban landscape, not giving her a single word, thus making her silent in a literal sense as well. He creates a living string-puppet whose actions are decided and directed by the author. After performing a series of daily routines in her small faceless flat, she is instructed by the author to commit a suicide which she does and that’s the end of the staged life (both literally and metaphorically) and if nothing more- the death of Dramatis personae, but maybe the beginning of another out-of-stage life possibility?

The notion of a staged theatre life as opposed to also in a way staged reality we all live in nowadays has brought us to choosing this beautiful and still very much alive text as a pretext for the “Apathy” project.

We are interested in examining the relation between the theatre as a social agreement and reality which always works in a very theatrical way, especially today with all the staging happening through the social media where people try to create happier versions of themselves, which largely amplifies the feeling of indifference or apathy towards the real life. The neo-liberal individualistic mantra about reaching the personal satisfaction, mostly through consumerism, has brought us to loosing a sense about community or solidarity and prevents us from taking any specific actions because most of us deep-down selfishly believe that not much can be done.

This is the 21st century and yet the terrorism is still here more than ever and so are all the other extreme and not very efficient responses to it. According to Walter Benjamin, behind every fascism there is a failed revolution – like the one in Greece, for example?

The centuries have shifted, the identity politics have never been more elaborate than today, the notion of health and safety has never been more important and yet the world still seems very barbaric and so divided between the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.

It seems that 46 years after the Request Concert – we haven’t made much progress.

Let’s try to think about that not as individuals but as a community – for a change.
